The Herbst is an appliance which is used to correct the bite. In the past orthodontists used head gear for the same purpose. However, head gear was difficult to wear and depended on patient compliance. The Herbst is cemented onto the teeth and requires no compliance. When it is initially placed it will move the lower jaw forward to correct the bite, eventually the patient will grow to this new position. In a growing child it is very predictable and provides for excellent results.
Instructions: The Herbst is worn for about 1 year. It is very durable and requires no maintenance except for normal cleaning.
Concerns: The Herbst takes about 2 days to get use to. Initially the patient will bite on the crowns and chewing will be different. There is usually no poking or sore spots and patients accommodate fairly quickly.
